For decades, transport authorities have invested in technologies that provide deeper insight into the factors affecting road safety and traffic flow. Weather stations monitor temperature, precipitation, and surface friction. Wind sensors support decision-making at exposed mountain crossings. Traffic monitoring systems map traffic patterns and network utilization. On selected corridors, automated systems are also used to detect vehicles experiencing brake overheating or other critical mechanical conditions.
What these solutions have in common is their ability to improve decision-making through better data. This evolution is closely aligned with the principles of Asset Management. The objective is not simply to build and maintain infrastructure, but to manage transportation networks in a way that maximizes value, safety, and availability throughout their entire lifecycle.
In this context, data becomes part of the infrastructure itself.
Roadside sensors no longer provide information only about the road. They generate insight into how infrastructure is being used, where risks emerge, and which interventions should be prioritized.
We believe that real-time tire condition monitoring is a natural next step in this development.
While weather stations tell us about the conditions on the road, automated tire monitoring can tell us about a vehicle’s ability to cope with those conditions. While traffic monitoring systems show where traffic is moving, tire data can help us understand the risks associated with that traffic.
For Roadguard, tire data is therefore not primarily about enforcement. It is about adding a critical layer of intelligence to an increasingly data-driven transportation system.
Our assessment is that the future of road safety will not rely on a single source of information. It will be built on the integration of weather data, traffic data, vehicle data, and condition data from critical components such as tires.
